New Technology

As a Pre-K teacher at a school of economically disadvantaged students, I was amazed to enter my classroom in August to find that a projector had been installed. Though it is not completely installed, as there are parts that are missing - it is a new beginning. Our principal has also informed us that all classrooms will get Smartboards. With a projector and Smartboard, many interesting ideas have developed. For example, calendar time, letter identification, and beginning reading skills will come alive for the students when they are presented on the Smartboard.

Anissa Mirtes is a Kindergarten teacher who sings the praises of using the Smartboard for Calendar time. Instead of the students being "restless and uninterested" during Calendar time, their attention has been gained with the use of the Smartboard. Listen to her excitement as you read her article.

I can almost see the excitement of the students in her classroom as they view the new and improved calendar!

Identifying letters will be more stimulating than the old standby of flash cards. Envision letters which appear like magic before their eyes. Even more amazing, the letters will be visible by all of the students at the same time. Using an interactive pen, students will be able to actively participate in learning. An educator named Clare writes on her blog that we should reach our students in a way that is relevant to them by using technological "resources to gain the most from our students learning."

Picture books will become more pleasing when viewed using a projector and Smartboard. When showing pictures from a picture book to a group of students, invariably one or more will say they can't see. Imagine how pleasant it will be when all students are able to view the pictures, as well as the text. Educator Tina Coffey also points out that an interactive pen can be used to identify key letters and words.

Exciting possibilities await, for the students as well as the teacher.
